Government Tightening Food Safety Standards
WASHINGTON — New safety standards aimed at reducing salmonella and E. coli outbreaks are part of a government effort to try to make food safer to eat.
A food safety panel established by President Barack Obama developed the new rules for eggs, poultry, beef, leafy greens, melons and tomatoes as well as for better coordination and communication among the agencies overseeing the nation's food supply.

2012 Deadline to Scan All Port Cargo Won't be Met

Biofuels and Food Prices
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer offered USDA's perspective on the relationship between food prices and biofuels in a recent press conference. Secretary Schafer commented on the theory that "the nation's growing demand for biofuels and the crops needed to produce them is the real culprit behind higher food prices, both at home and abroad.
